I read this book twice because the content was so great I wanted to make sure I hadn't missed anything. I loved the humor about David's search for the perfect clamcake. What I found out was that they are all perfect and very different. They all have clams (we hope) but recipes are well kept secrets. On to the history part. My worst subject in school. This book was filled with so much history, that is why I went back for a second read. I am from Rhode Island and never knew one historical fact that David wrote about. Bravo for your research. Now the dreaded dieting part. I could relate totally to that. Clamcakes are a staple during the summer in Rhode Island. You always order 12 even if you are alone. The very next day it is as if all your clothes have shrunk. I don't know what it is. Maybe its the humidity or you dried your shorts on the high cycle ? Last but not least, Summer. I yearn for June thru September. This book has made me appreciate the history and beauty of Rhode Island as written by David. My only problem now is that I am not within driving distance of any clam shack. I recommend this book highly and I am thinking of serving clamcakes and chowder for Easter. Well done David.Tourism should increase in Rhode Island after people read this book.Product details

I knew a little about this book before I read it because the author is my nephew and Godson, and since I also live in Rhode Island, I was very familiar with our beloved clamcake. However, I was not prepared for how much I learned about the little culinary gem that lives in the waters surrounding our tiny state. I also didn't realize that I should have read the book while sitting on the picnic table depicted on the cover of the book because I had a tremendous urge to walk the few feet to George's takeout window and order a half dozen. It's been three days since I read the book and all I can think of is summertime and eating clamcakes and chowder (or as we like to say chowda.) It also reminded me of many enjoyable Sundays with my father and twin sister, Mary, down at the escape road in Galilee digging for clams at low tide. We never came home with a lot of clams but a lot of fun was had by all. And we always called first bath in our one bathroom apartment because we were pretty ripe from low tide. If you are coming for a visit to Rhode Island you must read this book and partake of this delicious treat. If you live in Rhode Island you should read this book for the pure enjoyment. It's a great read with some very funny stories and I would highly recommend it.
Couldn't put the book down. Read it in a oner. I was initially skeptical about the subject matter maintaining my interest, was I wrong. I love when I am wrong. Some very interesting facts in the book as well as some laugh out loud stories. One obvious drawback is that you absolutely positively must have a clamcake after reading the book. What time do you think Iggy's opens?
Not sure why this fascinated me so much, but I found this book to be funny, informative and made me hungry. One of those unsung little gems of literature.
Really enjoyed this treatise on the clam cake. My husband is a Rhode Island native and introduced me to the clam cake when I moved there after our marriage forty seven years ago. This past summer we visited his home state after many years absence. One of our stops was to Iggys in Oakland beach. We were not disappointed. R I has a unique culinary heritage and it is great fun to read about the singular delight of a perfect clam cake. I look forward to his next volume.
being from new england, and a fan of clam cakes myself, could not pass this book up. most of my clam cake adventures took place in Maine though. was a fun book. still thinking about trying out some of those recipies. I'm in Florida now,so I settle for conch fritters.almost as good as clamcakes.if you are from NE check it out.
A must read! Even though I don't eat seafood and I don't live in RI, I love clamcakes and I live 5min from RI. My mom grew up in Bristol and we attend the Columban Fathers festival every year and leave with a dozen clamcakes and chowder. I went to Rocky Point almost every weekend when I was younger so this book really hit home for me. I let someone read the first two paragraphs and they were hooked. They had to pick up the book for themselves, but don't let me tell u about it just read it for yourself! Great work!!!

While reading about the better clamcake offerings, which Mr Stone has ranked based on the number of seagulls present, I could almost smell the salt air.
