I have used this series for years. I am a professional piano teacher and music therapist, and I started using these books for my special needs students. They go at a slow pace, and have wonderful duets for the teacher to play which make the simple songs the children learn into something special. It also gives the child more time to get their fingers accustomed to the movements needed for playing, and learning finger isolation. I have used this with many 5 - 8 year olds, as well as clients with autism or muscular dyspraxia, and it worked well to give them success when they struggled with stiff movements or poor motor planning. The songs are generally no more than four measures long, but in book two, they begin to gradually increase. The young children love the story that goes with. I invested in a mouse and bear to help with teaching, and it has been a HUGE hit with the younger students, really engaging them.Each song has a wonderful system of steps for teaching the song laid out on it, and it is great for the student to have it in print so they can use it when they practice.
I highly recommend investing in the workbook, as it reinforces the lesson book and also has some music listening pages for the teacher to address ear training for rhythm and note direction (ascending / descending). For lessons with my five year olds, they are great for breaking up the lesson into two parts - half playing and half in the workbook.
I had also used the teacher book, which outlines lessons and music games for teaching a class, in homeschooling my two daughters. If you know how to play, these can be an excellent addition, giving a comprehensive music curriculum including playing, singing, study of classic composers, coloring activities, and music games.
I enjoy supplementing with Piano Adventures when kids get a little older, as they have some really beautiful arrangements, but I love Alfred lesson books for their parent- friendly approach. It really helps out when you have young learners if the book is laid out simply enough that even a parent with no musical background could figure it out.

I've used this book for my little ones and they really enjoy it and grasp the concepts well. It has pages to color and deals with each concept one at a time.
Great books, arrived the day after her lesson that she needed them, but introduced to a simple scale and review for the week so that is OK. She is learning a lot and loving the lessons. These books are great for beginning piano.
